Arsenal will reportedly be looking for a new midfielder in the summer and his name has already been linked with several players. Who has made it to the London club´s TOP selection?

The Gunners have suffered a significant blow as Mikel Merino has to undergo surgery and faces a long lay-off.

Merino was absent from Arsenal´s 4-0 win over Leeds United and Mikel Arteta confirmed the Spaniard could be out for at least four months.

However, the midfielder´s father added that a return is uncertain because it is a rare injury.

Arsenal were reportedly considering bringing in a new midfielder as a temporary solution towards the end of the January transfer window, but failed to land any of their targets.

Leon Goretzka could be an interesting option for Arsenal

According to Christian Falk of CFBayern, Arsenal showed strong interest in Goretzka towards the end of the transfer window, who will leave Bayern Munich as a free agent in the summer.

Goretzka was linked with a move to a number of clubs in the January window, but he reportedly told the Bavarian giants that he would stay until the end of the season.

Therefore, when Arsenal came calling, it was too late for the German midfielder to change his mind and the deal did not materialize.

Falk reports that Goretzka feels the Premier League suits his playing style and could head to Arsenal in the summer if the Gunners show renewed interest in him.

A cheaper alternative to Sandro Tonali?

Goretzka played over 290 games for the Bavarian giants, scored 47 goals and won six Bundesliga and Champions League titles with Bayern.

The former Schalke midfielder would bring a wealth of experience and quality to Arsenal´s current squad and could fit in perfectly alongside Declan Rice in midfield.

Arsenal are reportedly linked with an interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali , but the Italian would represent a significant investment given the Magpies paid £60m for him.

Goretzka could command a high salary, but he would come for free and would definitely be a cheaper alternative to Tonali if Arsenal actually confirm their interest.
